Welcome to the Princess Anne Hunt

Foxhunting the Historic James River Plantations

Founded in 1927 and recognized by the Masters of Foxhounds Association (MFHA) in 1937, Princess Anne Hunt (PAH) is located in Charles City County and our Hunt Territory extends from Richmond to Williamsburg and from King William County to Suffolk.

Princess Anne Hunt is privileged to hunt the beautiful farmlands and historic plantations along the James River. We welcome visitors and if you are interested in riding with us or visiting a hunt on foot, please contact one of us.

Princess Anne Hunt meets on Wednesdays and Saturdays (Sundays during the deer hunting season) from October through March.  The Hunt maintains approximately 25 couple  of Old English, English and Crossbred fox hounds with kennels and stables located on the grounds of Sherwood Forest Plantation in the heart of the Hunt’s present day territory.

It was warm, no it was hot!  Hounds were eager while crossing the James River on ferry early Wednesday morning, headed to, for some, unknown territory. First day out ( on foot)  with hounds, puppies and staff --- led by Huntsman Martyn Blackmore at local fox preserve.  Fifteen and half couple followed by Masters Ed and Travis, Sue, Jerel, Alison, Sparky and Clinton ready with radios and whips to watch the hounds work while Martyn cheered them on.  It was so hot, that quarry was surely lazing in a cool location and not stirring about. But, new entry puppies Lancer and Hinson maintained eager spirits and didn't mind getting back to trailer to wrap a good day out.

It is with heavy heart and great sadness that we say good by to a dedicated member of our hunt family. Mike was a true animal lover of all things horses, dogs and chickens!  He truly loved PAH and supported our hunt in many ways. His first hunt horse was Chatham who carried him in the hunt field and earned his colors.  Morgan his daughter soon joined him in the hunt field on a lovely mount, Sonny. I know Mike was in his glory to have his daughter hunting along side him in many hunts together. Debbie and Mike was always a delight at our hunt social functions. Mike enjoyed all aspects of our hunt, painting fences, participating in social functions, serving on the board as membership chair.  Mike was a true gentleman and always was properly turned out no matter what function, his signature bow ties were always in order! Please enjoy a life well lived and give great thanks to a man that truly loved PAH!

I  leave you this quote from Mike:"I hug five horses every day - mostly twice a day. What a joy. Sure beats banking".

Our Presentation of Hounds at Sherwood Forest drew a good crowd of visitors, some of whom asked great questions regarding hunting and hounds.  It was a very hot and humid morning and "The Dream Team" were in full, formal livery but we survived! The hounds were a credit to us and were unruffled by the large group of people.  As you can see, they also enjoyed their meet and greet with one gorgeous little attendee, Mae Ramsay, who is just the cutest!  Another successful PR opportunity for PAH!

Charles City County Ruritan Club hosted their annual Steak Feast, September 19th, on the bank of the James River, on beautiful Berkeley Plantation. Established over 60 years ago, this civic organization help lead good causes, such as the Charles City Library campaign and scholarships for high school students. PAH were represented by Robin and Eric Strom and Sue and Martyn Blackmore as volunteer food servers. Eric and Martyn joined the male grillers who all cooked the "man-sized steaks", Sue and Robin had the less smoky and cooler job of dishing out bread rolls and salad! There were many community members and landowners in attendance plus a few PAH members. A fun evening! - Sue Blackmore
